How do I interpret my arterial blood gas results?
Rules for rapid clinical interpretation of ABG
- Look at pH – < 7.40 – Acidosis; > 7.40 – Alkalosis.
- If pH indicates acidosis, then look at paCO2and HCO3-
- If paCO2is ↑, then it is primary respiratory acidosis.
- If paCO2↓ and HCO3- is also ↓→ primary metabolic acidosis.
- If HCO3-is ↓, then AG should be examined.
What information can be interpreted from arterial blood gas values?
An arterial blood gas (ABG) tests explicitly blood taken from an artery. ABG analysis assesses a patient’s partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) and carbon dioxide (PaCO2). PaO2 provides information on the oxygenation status, and PaCO2 offers information on the ventilation status (chronic or acute respiratory failure).
What are normal arterial blood gas values?
Normal Results Partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2): 75 to 100 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg), or 10.5 to 13.5 kilopascal (kPa) Partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2): 38 to 42 mm Hg (5.1 to 5.6 kPa) Arterial blood pH: 7.38 to 7.42. Oxygen saturation (SaO2): 94% to 100%
What does a high PCO2 indicate?
PCO2 levels will directly affect the levels of acid in the blood. Increases above the levels indicated, could possibly mean that the CO2 is building due to hypoventilation or respiratory failure of some kind.
What is normal range of pO2 and PCO2?
ABG (Arterial Blood Gas)
pH | 7.31–7.41 | |
---|---|---|
pCO2 | 41–51 torr | 5.5–6.8 kPa |
pO2 | 30–40 torr | 4.0–5.3 kPa |
CO2 | 23–30 mmol/L | |
Base excess/deficit | ± 3 mEq/L | ± 2 mmol/L |
What does it mean if PO2 is high?
PO2 (partial pressure of oxygen) reflects the amount of oxygen gas dissolved in the blood. It primarily measures the effectiveness of the lungs in pulling oxygen into the blood stream from the atmosphere. Elevated pO2 levels are associated with: Increased oxygen levels in the inhaled air.
What is normal range of pO2 and pCO2?
What does it mean if pO2 is high?
Normal or slightly elevated pO2 and SaO2 levels indicate that the patient is well oxygenated; – Note the pH value to determine the presence of acidosis or alkalosis. Acidosis is indicated by a pH of <7.35 and alkalosis by a pH >7.45; – Study the pCO2 and HCO3 values.
What is a good PO2 level?
Most healthy adults have a PaO2 within the normal range of 80–100 mmHg. If a PaO2 level is lower than 80 mmHg, it means that a person is not getting enough oxygen .
What is normal range of PO2 and PCO2?
What does a low PO2 indicate?
If a PaO2 level is lower than 80 mmHg, it means that a person is not getting enough oxygen . A low PaO2 level can point to an underlying health condition, such as: emphysema. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. pulmonary fibrosis.
What is a good oxygen level with Covid?
A normal level of oxygen is usually 95% or higher. Some people with chronic lung disease or sleep apnea can have normal levels around 90%. The “SpO2” reading on a pulse oximeter shows the percentage of oxygen in someone’s blood. If your home SpO2 reading is lower than 95%, call your health care provider.
How to interpret an arterial blood gas?
– This is usually the primary disorder – Remember: an acidosis or alkalosis may be present even if the pH is in the normal range (7.35 – 7.45) – You will need to check the PaCO 2, HCO 3 – and anion gap
What are the normal arterial blood gas values?
The aforementioned components all have different normal values and represent different aspects of the blood gas. According to the National Institute of Health, typical normal values are: pH: 7.35-7.45. Partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2): 75 to 100 mmHg. Partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2): 35-45 mmHg. Bicarbonate (HCO3): 22-26 mEq/L.
What are calculated arterial blood gases?
– pH (7.35-7.45) – PaO2 (75-100 mmHg) – PaCO2 (35-45 mmHg) – HCO3 (22-26 meq/L) – Base excess/deficit (-4 to +2) – SaO2 (95-100%)
What would an arterial blood gas test reveal?
Check for severe breathing and lung problems such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD ),or obstructive sleep apnea
