Are sail numbers required?
These sail numbers are an important way of uniquely identifying a yacht for search and rescue purposes and are a requirement of the Racing Rules of Sailing, Rule 77 – Identification on Sails. The RYA recommend that all yachts have a unique sail number.
What do numbers on Sails mean?
One word: Racing. The numbers themselves usually don’t mean anything. Usually, the number is essentially “how many sails of this model have been produced before this one”. So, the first boat will have sail number 1, the 1000th will have sail 1000. Not all boats will come with numbered sails.

How do you change a sail number?
Removing the Old Numbers
- Peel off the old numbers.
- To remove the sticky residue, use 3M™ Adhesive Cleaner. Apply solvent to a soft cloth and rub over the adhesive until the solution can soak in. Leave the sail for a bit while the solvent soaks in.
- Using a terry cloth or other soft towel, scrub off the glue residue.
Why does starboard tack have priority?
Sailing on starboard tack – the wind coming from tribord? – the sailboat has priority. Receiving the wind from the port side, the port tacked vessel had to manoeuvre to avoid collision. The sailboat sailing on port tack will therefore spend its time checking that it is not on the way to collide with another sailboat.
Does port tack give way to starboard tack?
A vessel on port tack always gives way to a vessel on starboard tack, unless the starboard tack vessel is overtaking (see Rule 13). If both vessels are on the same tack, we need to judge which is the windward vessel. The windward vessel is the one which is opposite the other vessels largest sail.
